The Mainsheet - March

Commodore’s Comments
AYC Members, thank you for entrusting me with the Commodore position for 2021. It is an honor to be leading our historic yacht club. My vision for this year is to preserve our camaraderie through sailing and social functions, while doing what we can to keep everyone safe. In addition, we will be adding Friday night cocktails with "bar snacks." The goal is to offer members and guests an additional night to enjoy the club. We have been working hard since the first week of January to get the club ready for re-opening. I extend my gratitude to those members who put in the time and energy to help. Special thanks to: Mike Gram, Angie Gram-Frausto, Kevin Shuklian, Courtney Jallo-Shuklian, Joleen Darland, Bear Gietzen, Mike Taylor, Julia Cushman, Ginny Matthews, and others for decluttering and decorating.

Please feel free to reach out to me personally or anyone on the board with your feedback. Contact information can be found on the newly redesigned AYC website. I look forward to hearing from you and to a great year ahead!

DID YOU KNOW?
Monitoring your boats 12 volt system may need a closer look. A 12 volt battery system
needs to be monitored with an accurate digital volt meter that reads to the second
decimal point ( hundredths ). A full battery will read 12.8 volts, each reduction of .2 volts equals a reduction of 25% of battery capacity, correspondingly, 12.6 = 75%, 12.4 50%, 12.2 = 25%, a reading of 12.1 is legally dead. It may power a light bulb, dimly, but won’t power your VHF radio. You can see that the old style analogue meters with a needle will cover one volt with just the thickness of the needle.

A Note: a battery on a charger will read approximately 13.6 to 13.8 volts as the charge voltage must be higher than 12.8 volts. When the battery is taken off of the charger (or engine) a FLOAT VOLTAGE of over 12.8 will remain, this can lead to an inaccurate reading. To be absolutely sure of the state of charge you should read the charge 24 hours later, this is obviously unrealistic. If a piece of electrical equipment (running lights)are run for about 5 minutes the reading should be fairly accurate. So it is possible to check your battery while it is charging and it looks good when in reality it is low. When you are not going out, use the 24 hour test check to see if your batteries will hold a charge or need replacing.

Happy cruising and may your engine always start. This information was provided courtesy of Centennial Battery Company. Small differences in voltages may be noticed as battery specs are specific to the type and manufacture. Ask for a specifications sheet when you buy your next battery.
