COMMODORE’S COMMENTS
Dear Members,
The summer out on the water has been beautiful. The Wet Wednesday races and cruises have seen an increase of vessels participating. Orca Aerial has been there to capture the fun with race footage . Enjoy viewing our boats and crew at their best!
We have also come together for the many club activities planned. The Birthday Bash for Charlotte, one of our legacy members, was a fantastic lasagne dinner by Georgette and Dominic complete with birthday cake. The club was packed with revelry and respect for the fun sailing brings into your life. Charlotte’s charming family was at the club making her fete even more special.
The food prepared by our dedicated ODs and drinks crafted by our bar have also seen an important change for club camaraderie and atmosphere. Our newest Bar Manager has stepped in with wings on her feet! When asked for an update for members, she replied:
"Some news from the Anacapa Yacht Club Bar! Lots of exciting changes have gone on lately, as we make some upgrades to the bar area. Recently we installed a wine fridge to keep our wine at optimal drinking temp, and soon we will install a new place to house ice, open bottles, and store some of our commonly used liquors. We also hope to get some fresh paint on the walls, and better lighting to help our bar feel even more cozy and inviting. In addition to this we also would like to put a bit more emphasis on our beautiful outdoor patio area. If anyone knows of some commercial grade patio furniture that they would like to donate please message our new bar manager Cherry Speicher with details. On that note we are also in the process of reopening the ability to take donations for our 501c3 charity - The Anacapa Sailing Foundation. Anyone who would like to donate please contact our treasurer, Marshall Murphy. The bar is looking forward to hosting some new fundraising events in the fall, with the possibility of live music! With these new additions we also may be offering some new incentives for those who would like to become bartenders. Incentives will be rolled out in the coming weeks so keep your eyes peeled here on the Mainsheet.”
So you can understand my comment on wings! The board and bridge are delighted to hear and manage all of the potentials for AYC.
The summer CI cruising planning was a success so far, yielding a planned cruise to Prisoners and next to Coches with a following plan to Catalina!
Next coming is the Wes Golemon Memorial Race! The online registration is available (members email Commodore@anacapayachtclub.org for password so you are not charged) and if you find that you would rather register in person, please do so at the club. FROM THE VICE COMMODORE
This has been an eventful time for Anacapa Yacht Club! We are seeing new members joining us, and
with them an influx of ideas and enthusiasm for the club. This is a good thing. Change is inevitable,
however difficult it may be. There is always a longing for the way that it used to be, but time only moves
forward. With that -in the words of David Bowie- we will “learn to face the strange” with a sense of hopeful
anticipation for what our club will become.
Among the changes has been the creation of an Official Greeter for AYC. The irrepressible Jolene
Darland will serve in that capacity, being the face of AYC to members and friends. We thank Jolene for
taking on that task. Personally, I can’t think of anybody better to greet and welcome new people to the
club.
The Bar is now being managed by Cherry Speicher. Cherry is a new member and brings enthusiasm and
a knowledge of mixology to our little bar. We are looking forward to seeing our Bar offer new and
specialty drinks, as well as a good cold brew or a shot of whiskey.

Your Stuffing Box, Friend or Foe?
Often overlooked in it’s little dark part of your bilge, it needs your love and attention.
The stuffing box located in your bilge behind the engine allows the propeller shaft to pass through it thus allowing the water flowing through it to de adjusted.
The packing gland consists of 360 degree wraps of wax impregnated square cord, usually about six, to be inserted into it around the shaft. All shafts have their own required diameter. On Compass Rose the shaft is 1 1/2 inch diameter and requires 1/4 inch packing.
The shaft compression nut is adjusted in to compress the packing around the shaft thus controlling the drip of water exiting the gland. This water drip is essential as lt cools and lubricates the shaft.
If the stuffing is worn and not responding to adjustment, packing may need to be replaced.
This is not a difficult job and can be done in the water by yourself or a competent mechanic.
A small amount of water will escape during the process but if your bilge pump can’t keep up with it you have a bigger problem.
There is some debate as to how much the stuffing box should drip, the most common answer is one drip per minute. This is probably about right but the acid test is that it should be warm not hot to the touch when in use. If it’s to loose you will get excessive water in your bilge. Tighten it SLOWLY, about one turn at a time at speed. If it is to tight it will melt all the packing out of the gland, score your shaft and possibly seize up the shaft tearing the shaft out of the hull. I speak from experience as I once had a yard do this task and resulted in my boat almost sinking. ( I should have questioned the yard worker when he emerged from my bilge with a pipe wrench).
It is possable to install a drip less unit but rember the boat must be hauled out of the water for installation or maintainince.

CRUISING CHAIR REPORT
At the SUMMER CI CRUISING DINNER on 7/9/22 the presentation of material for selecting the places for dropping anchor this summer happened. The dates saved were July 23-24, August 6-7, and August 20-21. Ideas, suggestions, were heard and a vote for places to anchor yielded, Prisoners, Coches, Catalina.
On July 23 - 24 Mike Taylor and Todd Turner lead an enjoyable cruise to Santa Cruz Island and reported good sailing, all had a spectacular time, Todd fished for dinner. They were also able to join the club general meeting virtually, how committed is that from our Board Members!
Next cruise on August 6 and 7 will be Pelican instead of Coches due to swell from the past hurricane. We will be joined by a group from PBYC, some future trips may be open to our fellow yacht clubs.
