The Mainsheet - June

COMMODORE’S COMMENTS
Fellow Members, it is great to see our club getting back to normal. Thank you to all who attended the General Membership meeting, as well as our first live music night in many years. I would also like to congratulate Renee Anderson as our newly elected Vice Commodore, as well as our Lifetime Member inductees. Other benchmarks with the club was our First Friday Open House and Harbor Cruise on club boat Piper. We had a great turnout. Make sure to attend our next Open House June 4th, as well as Yacht Rock Costume & Karaoke party on June 11!

Wet Wednesday

Wet Wednesday

RACE COMMITTEE REPORT

We hosted three out of our four Wet Wednesday races that were scheduled for May. The W.W. on the 19th was canceled due to gale warning and large seas. We also hosted our second Island series race on the 8th, it had a smaller turnout than the first race. The wind was favorable for the A fleet to make a full lap around Anacapa Island. We had our largest turnout in over a year on 5/26 for W.W. 18 boats showed up. As we move forward through the rest of the season I would like to invite all of you to join us on the race committee, it will better your understanding of the rules and procedures required for successful racing. We can also provide you with exposure to Piper (our beloved club boat). The available positions on Race Committee are skipper, tactician, flag person, timer, number holder and last but not least hostess.

Thank you and see you on the water,

Todd Turner, Jr Staff Commodore, Racing Chair, AYC

CRUISING COMMENTS

This years AYC cruise to Pelican Cove was a mixture of opposite conditions. We on Compass Rose left on Thursday to avoid the crowds and stay ahead of some forecasted bad weather, (see “Did You Know?”), we were the second boat in the cove. We had mild conditions going over. The wind was about 10 kts and farther out of the north than usual. Course was 240 M so got some sailing in.

Eric and crew on Piper arrived Saturday and “as they paid for an E TICKET” ride” got to enjoy 20 kts and “square” waves but all arrived safely. The north westerly wind died down after 24 hours and we enjoyed Kayaking, fishing, and hiking on the island visiting the old Eaton ruins. If you are interested in the islands history I suggest you read “Diary of a Sea Captains Wife, tales of Santa Cruiz Island. We on Compass Rose stayed on for the rest of the week enjoying the warm sun. The weather reports said it was low clouds and fog on the mainland so we opted to stay where it was sunny. We hope to see you out there next time. Please see AYC website for upcoming cruising.

DID YOU KNOW?

Some local knowledge. A cloud pattern as seen below usually signals the coming of strong NW winds within 24 to 36 hours.

A cloud cap, that thick local layer of clouds or fog that covers the mountain tops of Anacapa or Santa Cruz Islands or the ridges to the north around Carpinteria tells of strong NW winds aloft and will usually signal an increased wind in our area. It happens when strong winds blow the warmer moist sea air up over the mountains where the air is colder and condenses it into fog/clouds. It’s a lot of fun predicting boating weather for old schoolers like me, or just look at the Windy App.

Mike Gram, Cruising Chair AYC

We at the Main Sheet would welcome any “Did You Know?” articles you would like to share.

PIPER UPDATE

Piper was used as the committee boat to start Wet Wednesday races in May with success. Upkeep on Piper is continuous as its use is ongoing. She gives us as much as we give her! As boaters we can understand the the care of her seaworthiness.

Thanks to all,
Angie Frausto Gram, Rear Commodore, AYC
