The Mainsheet - September 2021
COMMODORE’S COMMENTS
Fellow Members, the highlight of August was the 20th Anniversary of the Wes Goleman Race and Breakfast. Thank you to all who participated. Special thanks to Sarah Turner in the galley, Hank behind the bar, Todd Turner for running the race/results plus producing the T-shirts and Helene Goleman for the trophies! The icing on the cake was undoubtedly Jerry Roth recounting his fondest memories of Wes, especially how he earned the name Mr. Anacapa.
In our August Board Meeting it was decided that Open Houses will be held after the Club Dinner on the third Saturday of each month (for the 2021 year). This will improve the likelihood of new memberships with many of our current members in attendance. September's Open House (9/18) will follow our Hawaiian Luau Potluck Barbecue. We look forward to seeing everyone at the club dressed up in your best tropical attire.

RACE COMMITTEE REPORT
We started out August with some of the longest races of the Wet Wednesday season. Then the wind started to taper off so the race committee set the temporary buoy for multiple rounding, which always has great feedback. If you were not at the club for the results we have been posting them on the web site under the racing page in the results section. We had a great turnout for the 20th anniversary of the Wes Golemon Memorial, the third race of the Island series.

The wind was light and flukie at the start then turned off on the back side of Anacapa Island trapping the B fleet in the shadow. But the A fleet got through before the wind turned off. We found out the hard way that the Wes mark has broke off station and is currently missing so keep your eye's out. If you come across our beloved Wes mark please contact Todd Turner @ racechair@anacapayachtclub.org.
Moving forward to our future races we are hosting the Santa Barbara city race with modified sailing instructions. We will be meeting up at Smugglers cove on Saturday 9/4/21 spending the night and racing back on Sunday 9/5/21 I'm looking forward to seeing you out there. For further race info please see SI in your email.
Remember we only have two more Wet Wednesdays left in our season so pass the word and get your neighbor off the dock, let's get them Wet.
Race Committee out,

Anacapa Day Trip for Cave Dwellers
On August 21 AYC Compass Rose hosted a day trip to Frenchys on Anacapa Island to explore some of the many caves found there. Kiaks were the best choice to get in and out of them, it was interesting and a lot of fun. If you knew where to look you could locate some of the old foundations left in the 20s and 30s as fishing camps. The weather cooperated and it was a warm sunny day. The trip home was 12 kts. Beam reach, all had a good time.
The first two pictures below are the once existing bridge between the West and middle island.

EXTENDED CRUISE, LAST OF THE SEASON
We on SV Compass Rose are planning on an extended trip circumnavigating Santa Cruz Island stopping at all the fun spots (there about 10) it will take about a week. Up the back side then sailing down the front side. As Santa Wind events historically begin in October this is the safest time. We are letting our fellow cruisers know far in advance as you may need to take vacation time. Planned dates are September 20th to October 3rd. Please contact me if you have an interest or questions. DID YOU KNOW?
What knot to do
It looks really cool to see a halyard or anchor line coiled in a neat circle ready to be hoisted or deployed but messy may be best. Lines coiled in new concentric circles require a twist with your thumb and forefinger to get them to lie on top of themselves. If a line is coiled and let to hang as it pleases it will form a figure eight, usually messy looking, but will pay out perfectly. Coiled in a neat looking circle it will need to untwist to come out straight. This will usually result on a twist (AH) in the block and impeded smooth outflow of line, try it !

PIPER UPDATE
Piper has new a new slip arrangement thanks to Mike Taylor. It will be nearer to the club and a little less expensive. Maintenance on Piper continues to keep her use as the AYC Race Committee boat. Many thanks to all that contribute to keeping her seaworthy!
