COMMODORE’S COMMENTS
Dear Members,
The season out on the water has started.The races and parades have seen many of your vessels participating. We have also come together to prepare the club for the many activities planned. The food prepared by our dedicated ODs and drinks crafted by our bar are important to club cohesiveness and the atmosphere of our racing.
The library project has been completed and we will continue to make improvements. Volunteers, ideas, and library materials are very welcome. Please feel welcome to enjoy the reading. The office can help you with check-out.
The overhaul-type repair of the dock which took hours and talent from our volunteers was a great success. We had a beautiful Opening Day ceremony and the landlord paid rental credit.
With the St Patrick’s Day Race and a fantastic Opening Day aft of us, we are off to a wonderful Wet Wednesday season! The awards and crew prizes have been renewed with additional sponsors in the mix. We appreciate the contact-individuals that brought this together. The online registration is available and if you find that you would rather register in person, please do so at the club. ”Learn the Racing Rules 2021-2024” North U webinars will be shared at 6pm in the club on Friday 4/8, Thursday 4/21 and Friday 4/29. Hosted by former US Sailing Racing Rules Committee Chairman and racing champion David Dellenbaugh, the Learn the Racing Rules course provides clear fundamental explanation of the rules for newer racers while providing insights on the nuances of the rules for experienced racers. The program includes rules explanations, as well as examples of common and uncommon rules situations. Presented will be “LTRR2024”, session 1-2 and “Rules as Tactical Tools”, part 1-4.
As we continue to be the premier racing club of CIH, my gratitude goes out to all of you, well-deserving-members, that make me proud to say “ We are AYC”. Thank you for all you do.

What can I say? We had a GREAT Opening Day Celebration! Thanks go to all that worked to make this event one for the books. Thank you to our Commodore Angie Frausto for her inspired leadership. Thanks to all the members that donated to make a food spread like no other. Thanks to Joleen Darland for her work on the bar and making sure that we had a constant supply of Bloody Marys and Mimosas. Thanks to all of the Board and Bridge for their work. And most of all, thank you to our members that make the club what it is. It was a wonderful day.

OPENING DAY
I would like to thank all who made our fabulous opening day possible. Many outside Bridge and Board members complimented us on what a wonderful experience they had, impressed with the “family style” camaraderie shared by all our club members. Several of the Commodores from down south who have heard of, but never experienced, our Channel Islands expressed an interest in putting together a multi-club cruise. Sponsored by AYC to allow for spending some time on Santa Cruz with us later in the season. More to come.
My special thanks to Pablo and Mary for letting us use Tiburon in the opening day ceremonies as well as the AYC boats who attended the parade and the many members who helped clean, decorate and prepare food and libations for the event. This year is off to a great start. The first of the 24 Wet Wednesday series is 4/6 (see AYC website for entry form) or show up at the start line just outside the CI detached breakwater and check in with the committee boat ch. 68. First prep horn class A, 5:54 PM. Many races to follow this season, Anacapa Series, ending with the Wes Goldman Memorial and many more. Plan to attend the post race awards ceremonies at AYC Clubhouse for drinks, burgers and the awards presentation.
For you cruisers we would like to do as many trips as possible this year, more to come.

PROTECT YOUR PROP SHAFT
Don’t pay to have your propeller shaft ruined.
On a standard propeller shaft, be the boat sail or power, the shaft is mounted beginning at the transmission and goes through a packing gland (more on that later), exits through a cutless bearing and is connected to the propeller. A cutless bering is a metal tube with small multiple channels cut longitudinally in a rubber insert that allows sea water to circulate around the shaft to cool and lubricate it. It is located where the shaft enters the water on a full keel boat or in your strut between the propeller and the hull. Its job is to keep the shaft centered at the propeller end.
If while diving or when the vessel is out of the water you can move the shaft sideways more than 1/16 of an inch or can hear a thunk it will cause excess vibration and needs to be replaced. Why? A cutless bearing should last many years without need of service, but if the sacrificial zinc is mounted too close to the cutless bearing it will not allow enough sea water to enter the horizontal channels and properly cool and lubricate the bearing. The recommended distance of the zinc to the bering should be at least the diameter of your propeller shaft, preferably behind the cutless bearing.
It is unfortunate that we need to rely on bottom cleaning services to know this but not all do. My advice is to make sure your zinc is properly positioned in hopes that when replaced the new zinc will go in the same position. Talk to your dive service and, if the water is clear enough, you may be able to see it from the dock.
Something to think about. If your cutless bearing needs to be replaced it will be necessary to have the boat hauled out of the water, the prop. shaft and propeller removed then re-inserted, mucho dinero !

RACE COMMITTEE REPORT
The St Patrick's race we had 3 boats in A fleet, 3 boats in B fleet and zero boats in C fleet. The wind was 10 to 12 knots at the start of the race and built to 16 knots by the end of the race. 19 miles for A fleet and 17 miles for B fleet. Results:
A fleet: 1) 5150 , 2) No Compromise , 3) Cirrus
B fleet: 1) Kastor Polux, 2) Serendipity, 3) Alcyone
WW Race entry fee is is still $15 per race and there is 24 races this season. If you want to sign up for all the races at $200, you will get a great deal!

Dear Racers:
Thank you all for participating in PBYC's Spring Series. Race #3 proved again that our weather forecasts can be laughable. After a start in 5 kn of breeze, it dropped to zero, then freshened enough to get everyone around the course. There were times the RC saw 2 boats on the same tack pointed in opposite directions. That's sailboat racing, sports fans.
Trophies were awarded at PBYC after the race. In spite of being bribed by home-baked cookies from the crew of UHAMBO, the RC awarded RIVAL the trophy for 1st in the Spinnaker A Class, UHAMBO got 2nd in that class. THE MIGHTY GUMBERCULES was the Spinnaker B Class winner with WAI'LANI taking the 2nd place trophy. CHUBASCO won the Non-spin class trophy.
