COMMODORE’S COMMENTS
Dear Members,
Anacapa Yacht Club has proven to be the ultimate self-help-club in the way we came together off-and-running to the racing season! As you know it takes all of us to participate in making this year’s experience fabulous. Your interests and talents are there for sharing with us. Feel free to be engaged and really experience all that being here has to offer.
New to the Wet Wednesday racing is the drone video footage provided by Bill Mattson. He will be posting it on YouTube. This will allow racers to study and make adjustments to their tactics. Take a look at the April 27 WW Race video. In addition we have had photos shared by others. The great trophy presentations, along with a good barbecue and drinks from the bar, top-off the Wednesday evenings’ races.
The continuation of “Learn the Racing Rules 2021-2024” North U webinars will be at 6pm in the club on Friday 5/6, Friday 5/13 and Thursday 5/26. Hosted by former US Sailing Racing Rules Committee Chairman and racing champion David Dellenbaugh, the Learn the Racing Rules course provides clear fundamental explanation of the rules for newer racers while providing insights on the nuances of the rules for experienced racers. The program includes rules explanations, as well as examples of common and uncommon rules situations. Presented will be “Rules as Tactical Tools”, part 2-4.
We also have a lunar eclipse Sunday, May 15 and our resident astronomer, Gary Goodman, will be setting up his telescope out the backdoor of AYC for viewing . The moon will rise with the eclipse occurring about 8:30 - 9:00pm. You are all invited to coffee and/or hot chocolate and the bar as needed starting at 7:30pm. It may be a good time to check out those celestial navigation books too. Thank you Gary!
As we take part in the challenge of racing, the enjoyment of our natural environment, and the camaraderie and friendships please thank your mom for helping to get you here. We are in a good place. Our version of AYC has so much to offer! I was once told, “ You don’t join the club, it joins you“. I feel privileged, thank you.

FROM THE VICE COMMODORE
The secret of a happy life is to enjoy the passing of time. I have had that point driven home to me again this last month. I enjoyed a trip to Maui in April and, while there, contracted Covid. I am now well, but I was gently reminded that our time on this planet is fleeting and precious. We become focused on the ephemera, the things that seems so urgent, but are of no real importance. It is our nature, as humans, to become distracted by the shiny things in our sight line and to lose sight of our horizons. This is one of the reasons that I have come to love AYC. It is a reminder, for me, of what is important: people and the joy of a shared passion.
We have the chores that are necessary to maintain our Club, I would be remiss if I did not post the OD schedules, but I don’t want to lose sight of the reason that we do these things: our love of sailing and our love for each other. Let me post the schedules:

Exchange of Club Burgees
While in Maui, I had the pleasure of exchanging Burgees with Commodore Dave Schubert, of the Lahaina Yacht Club, and discussing reciprocals with them. They are installing new mooring balls off of the club and that will be provided to members of AYC at a discount. Mary and I are looking forward to availing ourselves of their generosity.
I am looking forward to a great month for AYC in May. We will launch our “Third Thursdays” Movie series this month. We will be showing The Weekend Sailor on 19 May 2022 at 7:00. No dinner will be served. Bring your own or bring munchies to share. The Bar will be open.
So here’s to enjoying the passing of time on the water and sharing each other’s company.

Summer Cruise Destinations
On the back side half way up the south of Santa Cruz Island 25 NM is Coches Prietos Anchorage, a picturesque cove with a large sandy half moon bay. The name means “Black Pigs” probably due to the large wild boar population that once and still roam the island.
Local knowlege is helpful when anchoring in this cove. There is a deep reef that runs from West to East extending about halfway across the entrance of the cove, look for the spike in your depth sounder. Not a navigational hazard but you don’t want to drop your anchor on top of it or in front of it and your rhode over the top of it. You’ll find 25 to30 feet behind the reef, you’ll be just off the beach but ample depth and good hard sand bottom. If you are a larger boat anchoring outside the reef in about 40 feet with still excellent protection.
If upon entering the cove you notice a frothy foam extending just outside the surf line and there is a hurricane down off Mexico or South America (more than 1000 miles away) there may be an uncomfortable swell in the Anchorage. Consider Alberts Anchorage just to the south, though it won’t hold more than 4 or 5 boats.
If you choose anchor on the extreme East side of the cove there are many small jagged rocks on the bottom, too deep to hit but if you are not using all chain it can chafe through your anchor line in a short time.
Going ashore usually requires a landing permit from the Parks Department so be aware. I once saw a person told he was in violation of being on the beach without a permit. As he was standing in knee deep water he replied that the demarcation zone began at the mean high tide mark and he was below that. Don’t know how that ended, I didn’t stick around.
Good sailing, hope this was helpful, I’ve made all these mistakes so… maybe you won’t.

Disabled Veterans Sail Day
My name is Bill Brayton and I am the CEO of the Non profit Disabled Veterans Sail Day (DAVSD). We have been taking disabled veterans out on the santa Barbara channel for a day of boating since 2012. We are back! This year marks the 10th anniversary of the DAVSD and we are having this years event on June 12th. This a great way to give back to those that have given so much for our freedoms! We need boats like yours to take Disabled Veterans out for a day sail or power boat cruise or an electric boat ride. The event starts at 10:00 am. WET WEDNESDAY APRIL 27,2022 -Poised for the Start

We had a great start for the Wet Wednesday season. Week one 4/6/22 There were 13 boats showing up for the first race. The wind was light so A fleet did course #3 and only one boat finished. Go No Comp! B fleet did course 2 and had six boats, three that finished, Angel Sea, Bandaloop and Maine Squeeze. C fleet did course 2, all boats DNF.
Week two 4/13/22, there was six boats, and wind was up. Three in A fleet did course 3. First place Cirrus, 2nd place No Comp, 3rd place Fusee. Three in B fleet also course 3. First place Bandaloop, 2nd Jedi, 3rd place Mad Dog.

Week 4, 4/27/22 ten boats competed. Two A fleet boats took course 3. First place Cirrus, 2nd place No Comp. B fleet four boats on course 3. First place Bandaloop, 2nd place Mad Dog, 3rd place Camp David 4th place Maine Squeeze. C fleet had four boats on course 2. First place Runaway, 2nd place Chubasco, 3rd place Capri Sun, 4th place Wojo.
